The Capping Set (Horizontal) is a precision apparatus used to apply a perfectly flat, smooth, and perpendicular capping compound layer onto the ends of concrete cylinder specimens. In strict accordance with IS: 516, BS 1881-120, and ASTM C31 / C 617, capping ensures that the compressive load is distributed uniformly across the entire cross-section of the cylinder during compression testing, preventing premature failures caused by uneven surface finishes.
The comprehensive set features a robust horizontal cylinder capper, an ergonomic cylinder carrier, and a heavy-duty melting ladle. The capper unit is built on a heavy steel base plate supporting two vertical, accurately machined faceplates. One plate is fixed securely, while the opposite plate adjusts horizontally to match the exact specimen length, locking the concrete cylinder into alignment for flawless capping compound casting.

🔬 Working Principle
The concrete cylinder is placed into the lower halves of the capper's split holders, and the top clamps are bolted down. The adjustable vertical plate is slid horizontally until it aligns with the cylinder length. Molten capping compound (typically a sulfur-based mixture or high-strength plaster) is heated separately and dipped out using the ladle. The operator pours the liquid compound directly into the 'V' grooves on the vertical plates. The liquid flows smoothly into the gap between the cylinder face and the plate, cooling down rapidly to create a flat, parallel cap.
