Kelley Ball Penetration Apparatus

Product Code : MSI 2006

Product Description:

The Kelley Ball Penetration Apparatus (commonly known as the Kelly Ball Tester) is a heavy-duty field instrument used to determine the consistency and workability of fresh concrete by measuring the penetration depth of a metal hemisphere into the plastic mix. Built in strict accordance with ASTM C360 standards, this mechanical assembly features a calibrated 30-lb (13.6 kg) solid steel ball attached to a central sliding guide stem. Supported by a lightweight structural stirrup frame that rests on the concrete surface, the direct-reading graduated stem allows rapid evaluation of concrete consistency without requiring sample extraction or specialized leveling plates

Working Principle

The Kelley Ball Penetration Apparatus determines the workability of fresh concrete by allowing a 15 kg ball-shaped plunger to penetrate the concrete surface under its own weight. The depth of penetration is measured directly from the graduated handle to the nearest 0.5 mm. The measured penetration value is used to estimate concrete consistency, with approximately twice the Kelley Ball reading corresponding to the conventional slump value.
