Lateral Extensometer
Product Code: MSI 2050
The Lateral Extensometer is a high-precision mechanical metrology instrument designed to determine the lateral extension (radial deformation) of concrete cylinder specimens while undergoing axial load testing under compression. This specialized laboratory tool is essential for civil engineering researchers and QA managers looking to accurately analyze concrete elasticity characteristics, strain parameters, and Poisson’s ratio metrics.
Engineered to fit standard 150 mm diameter x 300 mm high cement concrete cylinders, the unit features a balanced structural architecture consisting of two movable frames pivoted smoothly at one end. The extensometer safely clamps directly onto the specimen cylinder body via tightening thumbscrews, transferring subtle physical expansion changes directly to a high-precision, built-in dial gauge indicator.

🔬 Working Principle
A cured 150 mm x 300 mm concrete cylinder is centered inside a compression testing machine. The lateral extensometer frame is placed around the middle section of the cylinder and locked securely into place by adjusting the tightening screws until the structural pivots hold firm.
The dial gauge tip is positioned so it rests cleanly on the measuring anvil face. Using the fine-thread anvil screw, the dial pointer is calibrated perfectly to zero. As the compression platens apply axial load, the concrete cylinder bulges radially outward. This lateral expansion forces the pivoted frames to separate slightly, moving the dial gauge tip against the anvil to display live deformation down to 0.002 mm.
💡 Advantages
Enables advanced elastic deformation calculations crucial for designing safe high-rise and seismic structural concrete mixes.
Extremely high visual resolution (0.002 mm) allows operators to capture subtle microscopic strain movements well before sample failure.
Rigid, zero-flex mechanical links prevent external frame vibration from skewing final calculation logs.
Fitted protective wooden case shields the sensitive dial pointer mechanism from impact shock in busy laboratory environments.
