Sand Density Cone Apparatus
Product Code : MSI 3035
Standard Used : ASTM D1556 | AASHTO T191
Manufactured in strict compliance with American testing standards for determining the in-place density and unit weight of soil using the sand cone method.
Product Description
The Multitech Scientific Instruments MSI 3035 Sand Density Cone Apparatus is a rugged, field-ready instrument used for the in-situ density determination of fine-grained compacted soils. This apparatus standardizes the widely accepted sand cone method. The test procedure consists of digging a test hole into the soil substrate, collecting and weighing the excavated sample, and subsequently filling the void with calibrated dry sand from the cone container to calculate its exact volume. This provides geotechnical engineers and site inspectors with a direct, non-electrical calculation of field dry density and compaction percentage.
Features
Precision Dual-Cone Valve: Engineered with a heavy-duty double metal cone assembly featuring a smooth-turning mechanical brass valve to ensure uniform sand distribution without shearing or bridging.
High-Capacity Plastic Storage Jar: Supplied with a thick-walled, shatterproof 5-liter plastic container jar that permits easy visual tracking of the sand levels during field execution.
Heavy-Gauge Guided Base Tray: Includes a sturdy metal excavation tray designed with a raised central rim flange to securely lock the 165.1 mm metal cone perfectly centered over the test hole.
Available Large-Diameter Configurations: While the standard unit features a 6½-inch setup, a heavy-duty 12-inch (305 mm) Sand Density Cone Apparatus variant can be supplied on request at an extra cost for coarse aggregates and deeper layer horizons.
Application
Conducts rapid, reliable in-place bulk and dry density profiling on structural highway fills, airport runways, and building foundation earthworks.
Serves as the primary reference method to audit field compaction compliance against laboratory ASTM Proctor curves.
Extensively utilized by independent engineering testing consultancies, global infrastructure contractors, and public works testing departments.
