🔬 Working Principle

Fine aggregate is pre-soaked in water and then gently surface-dried. The conical mold is placed broad-side down on a smooth, non-absorbent surface. The mold is filled to overflowing with the aggregate sample in a standard single layer or filling profile.

Using the calibrated 12-ounce tamping rod, 25 light drops are applied to the sand surface from a height of approximately 0.2 inches above the sand, ensuring the flat 1-inch face hits flatly. Excess sand is cleared from the top, and the cone mold is lifted vertically. If the sand cone slumps slightly when lifted, it indicates that the material has reached the required Saturated Surface-Dry (SSD) condition.
